For a reason I can't edit my comment. I forgot to mention that the future google maps doesn't seem to show a distance reference, the UI follows the shift from digital map to mapped services.

ps: I wonder if there's an open, possibly smartphone/crowdsourced picture database to fill the lack of photographic/streetview data in OSM. Thinking about reconstructing algorithm as shown by Microsoft Research labs.
