This presentation [0] does a good job of showing what's special about the Mathematica language. I don't use it myself (closed source), but it is undeniably cool, powerful, and different. It turns out that Mathematica’s design has a conceptual elegance that makes it capable of a type of interaction that’s nothing short of astonishing in its flexibility and generality.
