To add to it a bit: Your experience is not uncommon. I think Salesforce GREATLY oversells the "clicks not code" stuff. They're good at selling to a certain segment within organizations that thinks of themselves as savvy but don't really know anything about what it takes to launch a CRM for an organization (not saying this is you, just in general from what I've seen).

I've seen projects blow $1M+ in grant money on adopting Salesforce that have virtually nothing to show for it because the projects were badly managed and poorly resourced. It's unfortunately more common in the non-profit space, too.
